Providing Virtualization Information & Training for Small and Medium Business IT Consultants

I am proud to end my weekend owning no more servers in production. Not a one.

I'm sure you're reading this and blinking and wondering what I mean. How can I run the business without a server in production? So let me qualify a little -- I don't own any physical hardware anymore. I proudly eliminated every physical box I owned and loaded them into my car, out of our data center, and plan to sell them on eBay or something. Yet ConnectWise, Kaseya, Quickbooks, SharePoint, Exchange -- all still available.

I'm now writing a blog for Channel Insider -- I'm linking to it here so you can read more of my rants.

Is good enough, good enough?

Dave Sobel, CEO of Evolve Technologies, a Microsoft partner and managed services provider in Fairfax, Va., agreed.

"Microsoft is clearly gunning for the virtualization space, and they have a pretty good track record of making a dent in a space that they want to be in," he said.

Another real problem for VMware is that Hyper-V R2's management tools now manage VMware's ESX hypervisor, while VMware's tools won't manage Hyper-V R2.

I've been thinking a lot about the cloud of late. It's actually one of my HTG goals for Q4 to determine what Evolve's formalized cloud strategy is, and I'm sitting in the Starbucks today waiting on a meeting with a colleague who is a fellow virtualization expert, and our discussion will revolve around doing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) work in the SMB.

"The Cloud" is coming.

SearchServerVirtualization posted an article I participated in, asking "What is Cloud Computing?"

A few items I wanted to get online before I went on vacation.

Given the current economy, your clients are searching for ways to save money and better utilize what they currently have. Server virtualization has proven to be a popular tool to save money and quickly garner your client’s attention.

So now that we're moving to virtualized environments, how to you make this a managed service? I'm going to sit down and talk with one of the industry experts on this, Dan Wensley, and we'll talk about how virtualization and managed services come together.
